Installing Patio Doors
If there’s a room in your house that seems to be too dark, you might consider installing full glass doors that will let in lots of light. This is a simple improvement that can change the entire atmosphere of a room into a pleasant and cozy place to be. These doors will also give you more visibility to the world outside, which is particularly handy when you need to watch your children playing outdoors.
It’s not that hard to install patio doors by yourself. Simply measure accurately before beginning and you’ll be fine. However, there are some steps you need to follow whether you’re installing regular patio doors or fancier French patio doors.
To begin with, decide where you’ll put the door, whether it’s taking the place of a regular door or covering a wall section. Make notations on the wall of where you’re placing the door. Then check for pipes, electrical wires or tubes to make sure there aren’t any there. When measuring, add 4 inches on both sides, and 7 inches at the top.
Once you’ve marked the spot, you’ll need to carefully tear down the wall in that area. You might want to re-measure before starting this step. Take out all of the insulation and anything else that may be in the wall. Be sure to turn off the electricity before beginning.
Next, you’re going to remove the studs. Brace the wall first. Then cut them at the top and pull them out at the bottom. Hold onto them because you may be able to use them in another project.
A new framework will need to be built that includes sturdy side studs and a new header. This header should be made using 2x6s nailed together with spacer wood in the middle. It needs to be big enough so the header is the same width as the wall. Use screws to secure everything.
Now, you’re ready to install the patio door. Put the screws in the holes provided and secure the door. Caulk the edge and add plaster to the wall. Use paint to cover any exposed areas, and you’re done!
