Getting the Proper Measurements for a Sliding Glass Door

After deciding that you want to replace your sliding glass door or even the track it comes on, the first thing you need to do would be to get the proper measurements so you can order and purchase the correct replacement for your interior door. This is especially important if your sliding door is not of a standard size, in which case, you might have to order a customized replacement sliding door. Here is a step by step guide on how to get the proper measurements for a new sliding glass door.

First off, remove any wood trim that is around the inner part of the sliding door. To do this, you could insert a pry bar between the trim and the wall so the wood trim can gently be pulled free. Just make sure that you would be careful to not exert too much effort or force, as doing so could snap the trim into two pieces.

You can then place your tape measure from the top left corner of the sliding door opening so that it is firmly on the vertical wood stud. Extend your tape measure horizontally to the upper right corner. Depending on the width of your sliding door opening, you might need two individuals to assist you so you can get a precise measurement. One individual can hold one end of the tape measure and the other individual can help in stretching and holding the tape measure on the upper portion of the opening. Note the measurement you would be getting.

The next step would be to do the same thing for the bottom portion of the sliding door opening. Note this measurement as well.

After getting the width of the opening, you would then need to get the height and you can do this by getting the measurements from the top left to the bottom left portion of the opening and the top right to the bottom right of the opening.

Make sure that you would be getting the measurements twice so you would be sure of the figures you would be getting before you order the materials or request for a quote from a contractor.
